Mizuno JPX-900 Hot Metal Iron Sets

Mizuno's JPX-900 Hot Metal is without question the most intriguing design of the three offerings. Following in the footsteps of JPX-800 and JPX-850, the JPX-900 was created for distance with the help of a new one-piece 360 Cup face design and multi-thickness face that increases ball speeds.

Of course, there's more to the design than a single-piece casting. For the last few years, Mizuno has been using a boron-infused carbon steel in a handful of irons to create significantly thinner faces and improve strength in a non-traditional way.

The latest introduction is a high strength-to-weight ratio steel alloy called Chromoly 4140M that was used to create the iron head. Comprised of chromium and molybdenum, the material has been utilized in the past in high-end bicycle frames; it also allowed Mizuno to design a full 360-degree, deep undercut, and the thinnest face in company history at two millimeters.

While the 360-degree Cup face design has been done previously, the decision to go with Chromoly made it possible to retain a pliable, bendable hosel that typically goes away when heating treating 17-4 stainless steel — a material that's been used in the past to create cup face designs.

A multi-thickness face expands the hitting area, making JPX-900 more forgiving than its predecessor in a slightly smaller profile throughout the set. Working directly with the thin face is a strategically engineered Power Frame that's optimized for rigidity just inside the topline.
